Doctors are also on strike in many other big cities including Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, Ahmedabad in Gujarat, Guwahati in Assam and Chennai in Tamil Nadu.
Heavy police force is deployed outside RG Medical College while Sanata is inside the hospital building.
Five demands have come forward from the doctors.
Doctors across the country are on a one-day strike to protest the murder of a trainee doctor in Calcutta, India.
And more than a million doctors are expected to be out of service on Saturday.
The IMA Statement:
According to the news agency ‘Reuters’, the Indian Medical Association has said in a statement that the strike has started at six o’clock on Saturday morning and doctors are not taking OPDs.
However, hospitals have instructed doctors to stay at work for emergency duties.
Strikes In Major Cities:
A large number of private clinics and diagnostic centers are also closed in Calcutta, while doctors are on strike in several other major cities.
Including Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, Ahmedabad in Gujarat, Guwahati in Assam and Chennai in Tamil Nadu.
Hospital shutdowns are being described as the biggest strike by doctors in India in recent times.
Due to non-availability of doctors, patients are also facing serious problems.
Last week, a 31-year-old female trainee doctor was killed after being raped in a medical college in Calcutta, against which doctors and civil society representatives are strongly protesting.
According to the local news agency of India ‘ANI’, a heavy police force is stationed outside the RG Kar Medical College while Sanata is in the hospital building.
RG Kar Medical College is the same hospital where the female trainee doctor was murdered after being raped.
On the other hand, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has supported the protest and demanded that the investigation of the incident should be completed soon and the culprits should be punished severely.
Demands Of Doctors:
According to the report of the Indian broadcasting organization ‘NDTV’, five demands have come out from the doctors,
which include adopting a clear policy to prevent attacks and violence on doctors and hospitals.
Doctors have demanded that security be ensured by declaring hospitals as safe zones while ensuring the safety of doctors at their workplace and residence.
Doctors have demanded that a transparent investigation into the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor in Calcutta should be completed soon.
Justice should be provided and adequate compensation should be paid to the victim’s family.
